The Red Room curriculum is an ongoing process throughout the day. The children learn about the weather, colors and numbers at our circle time called Roll Call. We do language activities as we chat at meals. We learn social skills, sharing and teamwork as we play and pick up toys. We read and sing about safety and health. Science and nature is all about exploration and experimentation with magnets, mirrors, magnifying glasses and lots of books on related subjects. Learning should be fun and children need to be proud of their accomplishments, big and small…and that is what we strive for each and every day in the Red Room.
Our day begins with warm welcomes to our classroom with free play or projects awaiting the children. AM snack is at 9:00 followed by outside play, art projects, music, Roll Call, stories or free play. Lunch is at 11:00 with naptime from 12:00 to 2:00. Afternoon is, again, outside play, projects, music, stories or free play with a snack at 3:00. Our plans for the day often change depending upon what the interests or temperament of the particular group are. Very often a project or activity is totally spontaneous and originates with something a child might do or tell us about or bring in. "Flexibility" and "two year olds" go hand and hand. Annual events in the Red Room include a Pot Luck in October for our families, a two day Beach Party in February, an Art Show in April to celebrate "Week of the Young Child", and a circus show the Red Roomers perform for other classrooms during the summer. |
