The philosophy in the Blue Room emphasizes the development of social skills and peer interaction. The curriculum themes that children explore offer them the opportunity for skill development in many areas including gross and fine motor, sorting and classifying and other pre academics. However, more importantly, these activities provide a vehicle for developing social skills such as sharing, cooperation and communication.
The Blue Roomers start their day making free play choices and connecting with their friends. After a morning snack/breakfast they have circle time in which they have stories, songs and activities such as calendar or "helping hands".
Blue Roomers play outside every day, often both morning and afternoon; this age group needs lots of opportunities for large motor activities. There is a project time each day during which children do activities related to the curriculum theme being studied. Children have a quiet time after lunch each day, though many children no longer nap. In addition to the family pot luck and field day events that are celebrated each year, one of the highlights in the Blue Room is the once-a-month sharing week. Children bring items from home during sharing week to share, show and discuss during circle time. |
